What is Clinical Research?
Clinical Research involves the thorough testing of therapeutic medicines and medical devices in progressive steps called phases. This allows researchers to ask and answer questions in a way that ensures reliable information is obtained about the medicine being investigated whilst protecting patient safety.
Clinical trials are undertaken to determine if new treatments are safe and effective and should be approved for use. Clinical trials can also be focused on discovering new ways of using existing treatments.
Why is Clinical Research important?
Research helps us to improve treatment options and care of people with different medical conditions. It helps us establish important information about different treatments and to improve treatment effectiveness while developing medicines with fewer side-effects.
New treatments can only be made available if benefits are demonstrated in a clinical trial. A clinical trial is one of the final stages of a long and rigorous research process. Studies are undertaken with patients to find out whether promising approaches to disease prevention and treatments are the best they can be.
