Supporting our Community

Creating Meaningful Partnerships

Boehringer Ingelheim recognises that it has many common interests with organisations which represent or support the needs of patients and caregivers. We form these meaningful partnerships to help improve the health and quality of life of consumers and raise awareness of health issues and conditions.

As a company, we remain committed to the principle of reporting accurate, fair and objective information about our collaboration with Health Consumer Organisations and support the Medicines Australia 'Working Together' partnerships guide.

Boehringer Ingelheim supports patient organisations

Health Consumer Organisations, or patient groups, are not-for-profit organisations that represent the interests and views of patients and/or caregivers and consumers of healthcare.

In 2010, Boehringer Ingelheim Australia worked with the following Health Consumer Organisations:

Our support in 2010

Australian Lung Foundation

Boehringer Ingelheim is a proud supporter of the Australian Lung Foundation. The vision of the Australian Lung Foundation is to 'ensure lung health is a priority for all Australians' and they do this through the provision of a range of successful fundraising, advocacy, education and support programs.

Over 2010 our company supported a number of Australian Lung Foundation initiatives including the COPD National Program, the Australian Lung Cancer Trials Group, the Kylie Johnson Lung Cancer Network and the Lung Cancer Consultative Group.

Burnett Institute

The Burnett Institute, in conjunction with partners and local stakeholders, aims to support community health development in many developing economies including Myanmar.

Boehringer Ingelheim was a major supporter of the 2010 “train the trainer” programme designed to educate and support approximately 30 doctors in the clinical management of HIV. In addition, a follow-up mentoring programme to allow doctors to sustain skills for HIV clinical management was planned.

Cancer Council of Australia

The Cancer Council of Australia is a peak, non-government organisation whose vision is to minimise the threat of cancer to Australians, through successful prevention, best treatment and support.

Each year our staff across Australia participate in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea - the national fundraising initiative of the Cancer Council of Australia. In 2010 the company pledged to match funds raised by staff for this initiative.

Staff at Head Office also run a 'Girls Night In' fundraising event in our local  community which is also proudly supported by the company.

Collaboration for Health in Papua New Guinea (CHPNG)

Boehringer Ingelheim is proud to be a foundation member of the CHPNG which was formed in 2003 after a group of like minded pharmaceutical companies met to discuss how Australia could help their Papua New Guinea (PNG) neighbours in the fight against HIV.

In conjunction with our partners, the Australiasian Society for HIV Medicine (ASHM), hundreds of healthcare workers in PNG have been trained in the diagnosis and management of HIV. An ongoing mentoring programme provides continued support and training through a hands on clinical approach provided by HIV trained healthcare workers in Australia and PNG.

In partnership with the National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA), the CHPNG also supports people living with HIV in PNG through the establishment of day care centres which provide safe spaces where people with HIV and their carers can go for information and support.

HOPE for Cambodian Children

HOPE for Cambodian Children is a not-for-profit organisation that has built a centre in Battambang Cambodia to care for up to 120 children who have been abandoned by their families or community because they have or are suspected to have HIV.

Boehringer Ingelheim provides ongoing practical support in producing printed material for distribution to doctor surgeries and schools, to raise funds on 'Shades 4 AIDS day'. Proceeds of the project go to the ongoing support of the Battambang Centre.

Heart Support Australia

Boehringer Ingelheim is proud to be a supporter of Heart Support Australia, a national not-for-profit organisation committed to the establishment of self-help management programs and the adoption of nationwide information and rehabilitation initiatives for people with a heart condition.

In 2010 our support enabled input from the organisation into research about cardiovascular disease within the ageing community; and facilitated the education of its members on the concept of cardiovascular risk.

Kidney Health Australia

Boehringer Ingelheim support the Kidney Health Australia's Kidney Check Australia Taskforce (KCAT) Health Professional Education Program.

This support will enable Kidney Health Australia to expand the reach of their education empowering General Practitioners and Nurses, improving health outcomes for individuals living with kidney disease and reducing the health burden of chronic kidney disease in our community.

In 2011, Kidney Health Australia anticipate that they will hold in excess of 100 face-to-face workshops, educating over 2000 Australian health professionals. They will present sessions at the Sydney and Melbourne GPCE conferences and at PNCE conferences nationally, launch new and innovative chronic kidney disease online learning for General Practitioners, and develop new teaching materials and resources.

All of these activities are overseen by an expert committee who will meet throughout the year to strategically plan the direction and ongoing activities of KCAT. Boehringer Ingelheim's sponsorship will help Kidney Health Australia to achieve their goals for 2011.

National Association of People living with HIV/AIDS

Boehringer Ingelheim is proud to be a supporter of National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA) which is the national peak organisation representing people living with HIV/AIDS in Australia through leadership in advocacy, policy, education and prevention.

Our support enables initiatives such as Chin Wag. This project takes the form of a “chat show” style forum which allows HIV positive people and their friends and family to to access information from a panel of HIV healthcare workers and providers through the facilitation of Vanessa Wagner (Tobin Saunders) and Nurse Nancy (Kath Albury).

Boehringer Ingelheim also supports the education of Treatment Officers by sponsoring regular national meetings to allow training and discussion of the latest care and treatment issues. This knowledge is used to support HIV positive people in their own states and regions.

Boehringer Ingelheim is proud to be a member of the National Heart Foundation. The National Heart Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation which aims to save lives and improve health through funding world-class cardiovascular research, guidelines for health professionals, informing the public and assisting people with cardiovascular disease.
